For Thanksgiving this year, my family escaped the cold in favor of Canon Beach. It was a great time to visit the beach. The clear weather that brought such cold temperatures inland meant blue skies and sunshine on the coast. While there was a touch of frost in the mornings even there, the clear weather made it warmer and more pleasant than the coast usually is this time of year. I even managed to forget my worries over all my recent plantings while I was there.
So while my plants were suffering through this:

The trade-off was that the house we stayed in didn't have wifi, so I couldn't post or do anything else online. Not entirely a bad thing. It's good to disconnect once in a while. It does mean that I've got a lot of catching up to do, reading other blogs, sorting through photos from the trip, and preparing for the week ahead. The posts are piling up. I suppose it's a good thing that it's getting to that time of year when it's either too wet or too cold to plant.

ReplyDeleteI read so much, when I wasn't out enjoying the scenery. I love to read, but I frequently get sucked in by Netflix during my downtime instead. Pros of no internet.
DeleteNot having wifi isn't necessarily a trade off: whatever withdrawal pains you may have suffered gave way to true relaxation at the end, no? The photo of the frosted plants is very pretty, but the gorgeous pictures of the beach are truly inviting!
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't the withdrawal so much as anticipating the pile of emails and blog posts to read and write when I got back. While I was there, I was fully occupied either walking outside or reading.
DeleteIt is good to unplug occasionally. Some day I really have to go to Cannon Beach, it looks so lovely and peaceful. I've seen that series of rocks/seastacks in many photos. Hope you had a restful Thanksgiving with your family.
ReplyDeleteRent a house on the north end of town for your stay. It's a short drive to Ecola State Park (where most of the above pictures were taken) and you can still walk into the main part of town if you want to shop. The main part of town is a bit of a tourist trap and can get rather congested. Personally, I prefer Yachats, further south. Gorgeous coastline and a nice, quiet little town, apparently more like what Cannon Beach used to be like. There are more rocks, though. Cannon Beach is easier to walk.
DeleteMy family spent two weeks at Canon Beach every summer when I was a kid. It was a sleepy little backwater town back then but the beautiful beach remains the same. What a great way to spend Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteI've heard the town was better back then. Now it's a congested tourist trap. My family went down to Yachats for a few years instead, which is still a sleepy little town.

DeleteGreat photos, although of course I prefer the sunny, beach vibe. As we were headed home on Sunday (from Spokane) the frost in the outlying areas was amazing. The needles on the conifers were at least 10x their normal size.
ReplyDeleteI prefer the sunny beach, too. Someday, that's where I want to be. Freezing fog is more common in eastern WA. Spokane probably saw more of it than my garden did. It is amazing how it coats everything.
