Wednesday Vignette

Today I'm joining in on the Wednesday Vignette meme hosted by Flutter and Hum. I like the idea of being able to post a picture of just about anything, like Wordless Wednesday, but without the restriction of being "wordless."

My favorite stage of growth in Siberian irises is when the stalks are rising and twisting up, like some strange or ancient sea creature. I love the sinuous stems and subtle color gradations between green and purple. They look so nice against the fresh spring grass and the rocks of the dry creek bed (only visible here as a bit of grey in the background).

  1. It's a little uncanny that you mention this plant Evan. I was visiting a former coworker last week. While we were talking in the parking lot, I kept spying these huge clumps of Siberian Iris sporting these deep purple buds. I thought they were so cool looking, maybe even cooler than the actual flowers. Great minds think alike. :)

    1. What a coincidence! They really are great at this stage. Ah, so it was Grevillea rosmarinifolia. I thought G. juniperina wasn't quite right, but couldn't think of the other one.

  2. PS. Thank you for pointing out my Grevillea error. It's actually G. rosmarinfolia. :)

  3. You caught these at the perfect moment. I brought some into the house, but they bloom out and fade very quickly in the inside environment. Probably best to enjoy them in situ.

    1. Thanks, Ricki. I always prefer to enjoy flowers on the plants, myself. I've never been much of a cut flower person.

    1. Thanks, Kris. It would be fun to make a time-lapse video of these, as they unfold out of the leaves, overcompensate and flop over, and then twist back to grow straight up. It's neat to watch day-to-day.
